Testing students retards achievement, again

Further evidence that an education system that requires students to pass tests at certain ages is detrimental to learning was produced by a Manchester University study. Emphasising mathematics and English at primary school in order to pass tests, detracts from other subjects resulting in less learning and more narrow learning.

And readers of this blog will be aware of the inappropriateness of focussing on these cognitive subjects at primary level, rather than developing emotional intelligence through team and group activities, music, art and games. (Eg see Education should provide more support for experiential learning over academics in early years and BBC’s Tests reduce pupils to widgets.)

Data from 802 of England’s primary schools over the past 10 years shows that English and maths are taught at the expense of science, art and humanities. The study found 51% of teaching was solely in maths and English, and blamed government pressure to raise standards in the basics.
