Last year it was the baiji dolphin of China which became extinct – the first mammal for 50 years to do so. Now it seems that another dolphin is being pushed off the planet by humans – the Mekong Irrawaddy dolphin, principally found in Cambodia. This may seem to be far from you, but the reality is that this is another severe warning signal about the extent of our life squashing footprint. And Cambodian textile and other industry supports low cost clothing and other sales in developed economies, at the cost of their local environment.
Humanity must share. Developed countries must share technology with places like Cambodia so that they can move off the bottom of life’s pyramid without polluting the biosphere; so that they can leapfrog development in a generation and achieve fulfilling lives without costing the planet.
