If you don’t live in America you almost certainly haven’t heard about the strong arm tactics of big biotech firms like Monsanto, Novartis and Dupont. Even if you live in the States you might think that genetically engineered food is “gonna save the world”. Well it isn’t. And 90% of Americans want to know whether or not GMO is in their food. Despite that desire, biotech is spending millions to persuade (aka pay for) people, legislators and regulators to let GMO in to food without telling anyone. And that permissiveness is sadly being emulated in Europe, Asia, Africa and elsewhere. That is bad for everyone.
Ironically, the failure of ethics by biotech might backfire as investors and consumers begin to wake up to the truth and demand disclosure and restrictions in usage. But it might well be too late – on November 5th a cry demanding labelling might be defeated by biotech lobbying. And then we will all start paying for their greed and hubris as food quality deteriorates and food production systems become fragile and even less sustainable.
