We have been sanguine about the prospects of reform of the sad situation in Myanmar. The first sign that there might be positive change is the statement that Aung San Suu Kyi is optimistic that a dialogue might produce reconciliation with the military junta. He sentiment was revealed through intermediaries and comes as she communicates with the opposition NLD for the first time in three years.
Let us hope that political reform will occur in Myanmar soon, however, the track record is poor and her statements could be motivated as much by desperation and fear for others threatened by the junta as a realistic hope that Myanmar can redress the failures of the past 17 years and return to a more progressive economic dynamic and equitable society.
