Watching life disintegrate – species extinction.

Another depressing report about humanity’s greedy footprint: Wildlife Populations Plummeting. The Zoological Society reports continuing (accelerating) species extinction on land and in water.

Between a quarter and a third of the world’s wildlife has been lost since 1970. Populations of land-based species fell by 25%, marine by 28% and freshwater by 29%. Humans are wiping out about 1% of all other species every year, and one of the “great extinction episodes” in the Earth’s history is under way. Pollution, farming and urban expansion, over-fishing and hunting are blamed.

  1. It’s scary! It’s as though we are looking at the rest of the world from inside a bubble that we believe to be impermeable, making us feel apart, immune, when in fact The Big Monster (climate change? species extinction? the Monster comes in several guises) is tapping on our shoulder and about to chomp us up too. If there are no fish to eat, no arable/ unpoisoned soil for crops, and lack of variety of plants to grow, then there’s nothing for us to survive on. We have to hurry up and stop (stop consuming, that is).
