Trying to find your body …

As you get older its harder to get/keep trim.  Work, children and eating out get in the way, or at least add to waistline getting in the way.

My benchmark is my weight at age around 18 to 20.  Right now I’m about 5kg over that and I still want to loose it.  I just feel better and have more energy for doing things I enjoy.  What I’ve found over the past months is that I need to watch me to find out how to get/keep trim.  I notice what foods I eat that I shouldn’t (cheese and chocolate in my case) and cut down on them.  Generally I try not to eat too much, especially in the evening.  (I don’t even buy cookies anymore because they leave the pack and head straight for the bulge within a few hours of leaving the store.)

And then there’s exercise.  I have quite an active lifestyle.  In fact sufficiently active according to some because I spend a lot of time gardening, logging or building.  But I don’t think that really does it.  I’ve found I have to get on my bike.  Not a lot, but regularly.  If I can do that 2 or three times a week for at least 20 minutes (preferably longer) it keeps the fat off.

Today it was reported that researchers have quantified the exercise necessary for getting/keeping in shape.  It may not seem like news, but the reported studies add to the science.  I hope it helps with the motivation to “get on yer bike” or whatever you do.  It does mean giving up at least 5 hours a week of something else – work, children or TV for most of us I guess.
