Nutritional Medicine

I recently finished reading Nutritional Medicine by Stephen Davies and Alan Stewart. I had found it on a shelf in the house and flicked it open one day. It looks a bit academic – it’s a guide with some medical terms – but interesting. It must have been read by Mum last century(!) – its a 1987 copy that we have. But it’s very relevant today. In fact, most of the analysis and advice is pretty current. It doesn’t have the dramatic presentation that one often finds in current literature, but it gives good information on what to eat and why. One of the more interesting aspects is how it describes the interaction of foods, particularly when one beneficial ingredient interferes with the take up of another beneficial ingredient. This seems to be significant for some important minerals like zinc and magnesium as well as for a range of critical vitamins (Bs etc). It also discusses a whole range of particular ailments and how diet can help.

This book is definitely worth having and dipping into every now and then.
