As the year begins so the media coverage of the US presidential race rises. So much so that it seems almost like time filler already. But coverage is mostly irrelevant and a distraction to most people, not just outside the US but also within.
It is irrelevant to those outside the US because they can not vote, and the consequences of the outcome of both the party nominations and the presidential election will be difficult to conjecture till some months into 2009. In fact the differences between the contenders are often slim. The one sure thing, and a good one for all, is that the incumbent will be out to pasture.
As for those in America, they might be concerned about the party nominations and the election, but less than half those that can, vote. And the consequences of the vote are difficult to guess.
Its not helpful to make strategic plans yet, unless they involve cosying up to politicians so that favours can be expected when the results come in. In the US its called money politics; in Asia its called graft and cronyism.
